When someone has a publically-viewable profile, is there any reason Facebook wouldn't be allowing me to look at it when that person turns up in search results? I'm told that other people get little blue clickable links to investigate, but they don't show up for me. On the other hand if I log out, they do show up (yet I can't access them because I'm not logged in).

Quite aside from anything else, I have a couple of friend-requests pending from people who I don't know if I know, and I'd rather find out for certain rather than assuming that it's someone I know just because they know some of the same people as me.

Any thoughts?

(In other news, I'm finally trying to get together all the billable work I've done in the last month and a half so I can actually get paid for it. Man, I'm slack.)

So a 'publicly viewable profile' in Farcebook still requires a login to see? Sheesh.

Sometimes, and I'm not sure how this is connected to being 'publicly viewable', people have their profiles set to be viewable by those in their 'network'. For example, I'm in the New Zealand network, which gives me access to a largish number of profiles that people in other networks can't see..

Yep, you don't count as public unless you have a facebook.

Also, I understand some profiles are only publicly viewable to others in their own network (i.e your country, university, or whatever). If you don't set a network, you can't see those profiles.

Yeah, when I do a search, I get something like

Blue names are clicky. There are also black non-clicky names for non-public profiles. Do you get them all in black?

That's probably because they're in the same network as you. Morbid isn't in the NZ network so he can't view their profiles.
