Okay, finally well enough to be back at university, at least for an afternoon. On the plus side, a network connection that doesn't die every few minutes! On the minus side, we seem to be in the midst of a virus infestation. Someone brought some kind of virus in on a pen drive which then bounced around the university network infecting everything in sight. Hurrah. My desktop machine was patched and sanitised this very morning though, so I'm able to do a few things.

Sounds like you're going from virus to virus! Glad you're feeling a bit better though =)

Best I can tell, a bit of both. With four people doing stuff, it's likely the NAT table will fill up over time and the router resetting occasionally from that. But that's not the only time/reason it drops - if it were, they would happen a lot more often when more people are home and awake, and a whole lot more often when people are using peer-to-peer software. And that doesn't seem to be the case - it seems to drop just as much at 5a.m. as at 10p.m. as best I can tell. Those little one-minute connection drops aren't the whole router rebooting.

Now that I have a little more brain to spare (hopefully), I'll try turning on some diagnostics and see if I can't puzzle through some of what's happening. See if we can't get our ISP or line company to take the blame if blame is due. I suspect our shitty lines aren't helping, regardless - might be worth looking into getting them diagnosed and possibly replaced while it doesn't matter so much if the front lawn gets torn up (assuming that's where the lines go).
