The Home Stretch
Mar. 29th, 2016 07:06 pmIn 48 hours, I'll have submitted my PhD thesis. Currently looking at just on 200 pages (though a fair chunk of those are appendices). It took too long to get here, with the rest of Life getting in the way in various incarnations, but I'm down to an intro, conclusion, and a little bit of polish.
Into the breach.
Into the breach.

Date: 2016-03-29 07:28 am (UTC)Time to leave the office, grab me a bus, potter through a few tweaks and robotic tasks in the evening, get some sleep, and write up the good version of Chapter 8 (final conclusions and future directions) in the morning. Introduction, abstract and a final round of proofing in the afternoon. (Writing is already pretty tight, but it never hurts to have a final read-through for spelling and grammar.)
Thursday night I'm sure will feel very surreal and otherworldy, as the thesis-shaped hole in my life makes itself evident, before slowly healing over in the months to come. It will be a time for after-care: keeping myself busy and engaged in something so that I don't just stop and get ill as my mind-body starts to work out it has time to be properly sick now.
Alongside the dogged determination to keep going whenever and however I got knocked down, making time for preventive maintenance is one of the important skills I've learned over the course of this doctorate. It won't end here.
