I don't know what it was the happened, but in my opinion risks need to be taken, otherwise things won't happen.

In terms of getting on with your ex, it is always a good thing. With us, if I remember rightly, it was about a year of not seeing each other and awkwardness, but then after that it was all good. Friends will be friends no matter the distance if they are supposed to be more than aquaintances.
