I saw Hera at University the other day. My sister was certainly right about her being (a) a really talented singer and (b) rather pleasant indeed to the eye. Her latest CD Don't Play This is definitely worth a listen. I'd also recommend seeing her in person, as her performing live with just voice and guitar is great, even though the studio-produced CD with more accompaniment is a different kind of great.
On Saturday, I went along to the UCSA Ballroom to see the Scurvy Dogs [MySpace] and Taliband play. Taliband opened - a fairly reggae sound but nothing I particularly felt like dancing to. The Scurvy Dogs, on the other hand... far too much bouncing around for me. A bit punker at times than I expected. Great stage presence and performance, audience participation, and other coolness. A smoke machine disguised to look like a cannon. Band members roughhousing on and off the stage. Great outfits. Mostly original songs, and a couple of covers (*ahem* "re-plundered" songs) that were bloody funny ("Let me go on, like a pirate in the sun, let me go o-o-on, Blackbeard I know you're the one...). I'm just sorry they cut Ballroom Blitz out of their set, but to be fair the crowd was a bit young for it.
The only real problem I had was with the acoustics in the place making it difficult to hear the vocals - but then, this is the UCSA Ballroom we're talking about here. For anyone who's been to a gig or roleplayed there (of which there are many on my friends list), you know how it bounces and muddies sound if there's any decent degree of noise in the place.
For those who missed it this time (which would be pretty much everyone, as I didn't recognise a soul in the place except the Iain the guitarist), they're playing in Christchurch again on the 3rd of March at Jet Set Lounge, with Small Victories (also from Dunedin) and Not With You. 9pm-12:30am, $5 entry (or $4 for students and pirates).
Also, some of my local SCAdian friends made the national news tonight:
