Thanks to a heads-up from [livejournal.com profile] rikan_feral, I bring you NZ On Screen. Developed under the auspices of the NZ On Air broadcasting promotion/funding body, it's a which showcases a lot of what has been made in New Zealand in terms of film (feature and short) and television. It's a slick site, and I'm impressed by the breadth of content that's available too.

It's also positive to see that, where possible, content has been made available under a Creative Commons licence. Granted, there's a lot of it that's simply licensed for streaming by various copyright holders and industry associations, but it's a heartening sight to see all the same.

In any case, here's a few of my more interesting finds:
  • Tongan Ninja [martial arts parody]
  • Maddigan's Quest [post-apocalyptic children's drama]
  • Mirror Mirror [time-travelling children's drama]
  • The Quiet Earth [sci-fi film about the last(?) man on Earth]
  • Bad Taste [what Peter Jackson did before Lord of the Rings]
  • Sleeping Dogs [1977 film about a fascist government rising to power in New Zealand, branding their opponents as terrorists]
  • Georgie Girl [documentary about our first transgendered member of parliament]
  • Footrot Flats: A Dog's Tail Tale [animated feature of one of New Zealand's best known comic strips]

We've done some good stuff over the years.

Very cool - and I can access it from the UK which is rather impressive as you can't get the BBC iPlayer for example.

It's a bit confusing as to which ones are available in full and which ones are just available in clips... I don't quite get how that works...

The Quiet Earth I have seen. It has been a long time, but from what I remember it was pretty good.

I haven't seen Bad Taste but if it is as good as Heavenly Creatures or Braindead then I might have to give it a go.

Was a little disappointed to find they didn't have Under the Mountain but I have now taken the time to suggest that one to them! :P

Anyway, a massively wonderful site that is likely to get some of my bandwidth... ^_^

Yay! Mirror Mirror was my favourite tv programme when i was younger. Mum recorded all of it, episode by episode, onto video for us and i think she still has it somewhere.

I watched Quiet Earth late last year, and it is (still) very very good science fiction. It is helped by Bruno Laurence, who does mad very well.
