Mail call.

A letter has arrived from the university, telling me that I've been awarded a PhD scholarship for 2009, for up to three years. It's enough to live on comfortably, and even save up a bit here and there for travel and other good things.

After such a long time just hanging out and waiting for a response, suddenly a weight has been lifted.

Now I just need to get rid of this 'flu so I can get some of my interim research done, and it shall be a delightful Stressmas period indeed.

I managed to scrape together the necessary paperwork within 48 hours, since I heard about the scholarship just before the deadline, so I'm quite glad the application passed muster :-) My planned course of action is something that I'm fairly passionate about though, so writing personal statements and tweaking research proposals on short notice wasn't too onerous a task.

Nice one! The only thing I can recommend is that you try your best to be done in those 3 years so you don't have to go from relative comfort to student allowance levels afterwards ;)

I'm still pretty good about living on a semi-student budget, having been in and out of the workforce a couple of times (including some feast-or-famine contract work). More income means more savings, which comes in handy when your beloved is on another continent :-)

Yep, you guessed right I figured you would. I know the sources for funding in PhD or MA degrees are getting harder to come by and I'm about to start that process myself. I have 3 schools picked all 3 said yes we want you, now its finding the money to realistically do it as part of my work is going to need to be in Mexico and much of the US south west, about 6 months at the body farm and many, many hours in the collections of the Smithsonian.

I'm sure that wonderful woman told you I'm going in the same direction she is.

That's great news! It seems that this holiday season has been filled with little miracles: a friend of mine who's been unemployed for seven months is now employed; Alex got the job he's been really wanting yesterday (and I am thrilled! it means a lot to both of us); and many more, very small-but-lovely, incidents. A paid PhD scholarship: wow. Fantastic!

He'll be working at a company that provides wi-fi primarily to businesses. It's a full-time position at $14/hr., and his mother tells me it also offers benefits. I was glad enough to hear he'd be making good pay, but the addition of benefits is fantastic.
