Sep. 4th, 2010 02:52 pmHello everyone in LiveJournal land, I'm still alive! We just had a big earthquake. Power's finally back on, and hopefully water soon. Some damage in the house but nothing huge as far as we can tell. Other parts of the city didn't go so well by comparison.
Since it'd be silly to go out and take photos of the damage (and there are enough idiots driving past as it is out there), I'll give you a shot I happened to take for game photography reference:

And from the BBC:

So yes. Quite a mess. Still, we have some bottled water, canned and dry food, backup light sources and a few other useful things here and there. No major injuries I've heard of amongst friends and loved ones, though my uncle's house is off its foundations a bit. With any luck, no big aftershocks.

Date: 2010-09-04 11:57 am (UTC)It breaks my heart that all the beautiful historic buildings seem to have been damaged the worst, but I guess one upside might be that they might be replaced with buildings that are appropriate for the climate.

Date: 2010-09-05 11:03 pm (UTC)While it was a similar magnitude to the one in Haiti, one of the main differences there is that we have a first world infrastructure, and major buildings get designed/retrofitted with earthquake resistance in mind.
The big test is going to be economic recovery. Lots of older inner city buildings are the ones that were ones that had major damage.
