Seems like a bunch of similar progressions to me. But hey, there's no reason why an NZ band would suddenly start to sound more like a 2010 Grammy winner or anything, right?

And just to complete my music snobbery, their old shit is better ;-)

Those chord progressions are straight from '80s synth pop. MGMT in particular reminded me a lot of the kind of stuff we listened to back in the day when cellphones were the size of a house brick.

On the other hand, MGMT's live drumming is what drives all the songs on their first album, which is unusual outside of metal, and definitely not a synth pop thing.
