Sep. 19th, 2008 08:21 amLast weekend's crunch time seems to have paid off well, although my sleep patterns have paid the price. I'm currently debating whether to long-haul it and head to bed around 10pm, or try a nap now and work my way back around to semi-regular by the end of the weekend. Decisions, decisions...
Our game project met its deadline well and survived first contact with theenemy players well enough. Functionality aside, hopefully it taught them a thing or two as well. I'm really hoping we get some useful feedback when it comes to the critique part of their assignments - enjoying my work may be good for me, but I like it to be useful and well-honed, too.
To-scale architecture in Second Life while trying to conserve primitives is an interesting challenge. It also underscores for me just how limiting it is to have building spaces in virtual worlds constructed according to real-world dimensions and constraints. Things like economy of space and even stability of construction mean little in a world where you suspend a building 50 metres in the air and fly to it with no effort, and concepts like tensile strength and the cost of building materials are simply not implemented.
On the non-fiction to-read list:
The Making of Second Life, Wagner James Au
Digital Game-Based Learning, Marc Prensky
Twisty Little Passages - An Approach to Interactive Fiction, Nick Montfort
On the fiction to-read list:
The Algebraist, Iain M. Banks
The Book of Unremitting Horror, Dave Allsop and Adrian Bott
