Coming in at head height...
Feb. 9th, 2005 12:31 pmToday's the day before the HITLab NZ's Consortium Meeting 2005. It's the time of year that we invite a whole bunch of like-minded academic and business institutions from around the world to get together and see what we do, and vice-versa.
I'm currently taking a break from running around the lab like a mad thing helping people make final preparations for tomorrow morning, where I'll be getting up shortly before 7am in order to turn up before meeting attendees get to university for registration and morning talks. We've got around 280 people attending this year; it's no SIGGRAPH or GDC, but it's still a fairly sizable international meeting of minds for a conference-like gathering in New Zealand.
A few of the speakers and so forth have turned up already; we've got Siemens Corporate Research and Samsung delegates in the lab as I write, and earlier today I presented the stuff that I've been working on to Professor Hiroshi Ishii from the MIT Media Lab. It's nice to have respected experts in the field being encouraging about your work.
During the meeting (over Thursday and Friday) I'll be the primary point of contact for the representative from Eastman Kodak (you might have heard of them if you've ever seen, like, cameras and stuff). Smiles, people.
Along with our academic/business, there's also an artistic conference going at the same time, with a bunch of artists who're interested in extending their work into our field of expertise. I like seeing art and tech collide, so hopefully I'll be able to attend some of that as well.
So, long hours over the rest of the week. Talking my throat out, explaining stuff, networking and Being Generally Helpful. Thankfully there will be catered food (morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, a cocktail function at the Christchurch Art Gallery and a dinner at Clearwater Resort), so I shall be reminded to eat for a change.
Also, in unrelated news, world piracy levels are down by a third in 2004 (arr!), and Cuba bans smoking in public.
Oh, and Happy Year of the Wood Rooster, everyone.
