So. It looks like my two flatmates will both be wanting to move out in anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months. Financially and health-wise it could have come at a worse time for me, but... well. To be honest, it could have come at many better times, too. Still, they've got good reasons for wanting to be in other places, so I hope things work out well for them both.

Anyway. This leaves me with two options:
  • Find two new tenants. This would mean attracting a couple of people to live in a three bedroom place in Cashmere (close to the Orbiter/30-40 mins from university) for $75 a room plus power/phone/tv/net. It's a decent, safe, fairly quiet neighbourhood (heck, I've lived here most of my life), and for a three bedroom place the price isn't too bad, all things considered. Of course, it's not exactly party central for those who aren't well-blessed with transport.

  • Find a new place to live. This means either finding an existing flat looking for a tenant, finding a group of people and a place, or finding a small place of my own. I gather the rent market in Christchurch is rather nasty at the moment, so I very much doubt I'm going to get something equivalent to my current dwelling - especially if I want to be over near the university to help improve my social life.

So. Many things to sort out in the next little while. The exact whens and wheres of people moving have yet to be sorted, but I figure it's best to apprise the landlady of the situation sooner rather than later. I should probably check with the cable people to see if there's any penalty for cancelling service at this point (I vaguely remember we had free installation based on a period of service). I'll probably need to discuss storing some of my stuff with my parents, and maybe the possibility of moving home for a short period if I need to find a new place to live (though I'd rather not rely on that if humanly possible).

    Any suggestions/thoughts/advice?

I know five people looking for tenants or flatmates at the moment, and they're all having a pretty hard time. I'd move somewhere else. Is it a periodic lease? Are you on individual leases or would you have to cover all the rent until you found new people?

Flatmates needed in a flat on Blenheim Rd, by the orbiter, $67.50...not exactly exorbitant. There's lots of places looking for flatmates.

Periodic is the good kind! When does your lease finish then? You don't want to get somewhere new and be stuck having to pay out the rest of your lease in the old place!

You should totally come and live in my house. It has a sunny double room with an ample provision of shelves, three excellent flatmates, nice furnishings, my library of comics and a fountain in the shape of a lion. It's five minutes' walk from the computer science department.

You got your [livejournal.com profile] strawfellow, your [livejournal.com profile] mattmatt an' your [livejournal.com profile] comikaze. They are all personal friends of mine, and I can vouch for their sanity and good-flatmate-ness.

I have an old friend moving to christchurch soon, I think he would be interested in a flat. He'll be staying with us untill he finds something..
I really don't think you should move unless you have to, it's quite a hard thing finding somewhere you like well enough to stay there, or at least, it is with us :)

    Good luck either way though.

Oh it would be a TRAGEDY for you to leave New Zealand. Maybe I could visit some day...
