Just before heading off to university today, my monitor flickered a couple of times and then the picture faded out, never to return. This leaves me with two options: figure out how to get my current aging monitor fixed, or get a new one. So: Does anyone know where a good place to get a monitor repaired in Christchurch would be? Alternately where's a good place to get a fairly decent monitor on a grad student budget, and would you have any recommendations in terms of manufacturer/model? Decent quality second-hand/hand-me-down ones also considered. Thanks.

Guarantee not worth fixing.

One of the few companies that fixed them closed up shop a couple of years ago, so I'd say you're out of luck. Try a look at what MoltenMedia have got, or even consider buying one. $350 gets you a 17" LCD, these days.

I have a spare 17" CRT for sale, $100 ono, but You'd have to pick it up from Rangiora or wait 'til I'm down in a month. So not ideal, but an option.

Moniter available

Probably not worth your money to get it fixed, most likely you can buy a new better one for the money it'd cost to get it even looked at :/

Eh, if you were in Orcland, I have several old spares that you could pick and choose from.

$350 will almost get you a 17" LCD these days!

When my old tried and true Monitor went 'phut' I bought a new 17" Samsung CRT for ~$250 about 18 months ago

http://www.pricespy.co.nz/cat_5.html is the easiest way of trolling for prices, but service at a lot of these "Happy Fun Golden Dragon" PC stores fib a bit, not so much about prices, but on stocking and delivery times :P

Ascent http://www.ascent.co.nz/ on the other hand has less bullshit, a most excellent website, and are often worth the extra few $ for the straightforwardness. Also the best site for figuring out what you actually want.

Lastly, Check Dell. Sometimes they have really good things cheap, sometimes they have even better stuff cheap too. I looked at cheap 19" widescreen LCDs, and looked and then ran out of willpower and bought the 20" widescreen Dell. Using it now. It is love.

As well as often being the cheapest, Ascent ship to New Zealand addresses for free.

oh, and the old monitor was ressurected by a strange old man in a TV shop who checked for dry solder joints. $50!
