Many sundries
Jul. 13th, 2006 06:10 pmMy sister got married last weekend to her boyfriend Captain (yes, that's his real name), at the Old Stone House on the other side of Cashmere Hill from my parents' home.
The celebrant was a neighbour who watched us grow up and move out of home (even if my sister's just up the road nowadays); it was good to catch up with her again - a while ago she had cancer, so we're glad that she managed to recover from it, let alone having her do nice things for our family.
Before the wedding and at the reception, I finally got to meet large parts of his family. By and large, they seem to be a pretty cool bunch of people. It was also nice to catch up with a few old friends I hadn't seen in ages.
I'm doing my first stint of tutoring this week. EDUC122 (Special Topic: Computer Games and Education) is a brand new course, so we're still working a couple of the kinks out of it, but it generally seems to be going well so far.
We're introducing them to Neverwinter Nights and its toolset. To start off with, we just got them playing the game - later we'll be introducing them to the authoring tools and getting them to create their own areas, items, and so forth. Later there will be an assignment where they use those skills to create their own educational games with learning outcomes.
There are a few students in the class who will have to try a lot harder than others; many of the people in the class have had a lot of exposure to gaming before though, which makes our job a lot easier.
User studies are slogging a bit at the moment. So far I've only done six out of sixteen - the time I spend tutoring takes a large chunk out of my afternoons, so I am going to have to get more people in in the evenings or figure out that whole getting-up-earlier thing again. Still, the data I'm getting out of questionnaires and so forth looks promising, and I can do a fair bit of the analysis side of things before I get all the data together anyway. Yay.
Also, I'm looking into the possibility of visiting here when I'm holidaying in September. Looks like a lab doing some interesting research. Any excuse to be geeky ;-)
Speaking of which, the ever-lovely
wolfwitch comes up with some great geekery from time to time, including: http://www.ancientlibrary.com/ and http://www.librarything.com/
