Proofing Goodness
Aug. 29th, 2006 02:09 amAfter a good sleep and a bit of food, I sat down in the lounge and did a bunch of proofreading on my thesis draft this evening. After reading through the first 40 pages, I've found a few tweaks I'd like to make in the way I've worded things, a couple of concepts I should probably clarify a little earlier than I have to make better sense to the reader, and only eight typos. Half of them punctuation. I haven't even put this thing through a spell checker yet. Perhaps the early draft I sacrificed in the shredder to the Gods of Academic Writing this afternoon did the trick (okay, so I really just wanted to play with the shredder they parked next to my desk).
I sent a copy of the draft to my parents, too. My mother, as some of you may know, has been an English teacher for longer than I've been alive. One of the advantages of having been an English teacher that long is that she actually knows how the English language is put together, and can use and critique it effectively1. I got an email a couple of hours ago with some formatting suggestions here and there, but by and large she's impressed with the standard of my writing. The confidence boost from that really helps - though I'll still be sure not to rest on my laurels and get lazy about it from here on in.
A bit of checking shows I've got $75 worth of CompSci printer budget allocated to me that I haven't even touched yet, which removes some of the worry from printing out my thesis for submission. Even if I completely screw up a print run, I have enough resources there to print off about five copies without any hassle.
I've sneezed around sixty times today. It must be time for Annual Happy Nasal Tree Bukakke Season again (read: spring). Ah well; it's a good reminder to me to keep eating healthy things like fresh fruit to keep my body fortified, and to not let stress get to me.
