Around university we've had a rather curious little "viral" marketing campaign being done by Christian group "Student Life". They started with chalking up a lot of "Do you agree with Jeremy?" things all around campus, including on footpaths off-campus where the university shouldn't be doing anything.

Being the inquisitive kind of fellow I am, I did a bit of hunting around to see if I could figure out exactly what the deal was. Some people had said it was some kind of guest speaker or something. I found this, on someone's blog:
anyway: Do you agree with Jeremy? its Student Life's (another Christian group on campus) "project". first there will be banners carrying this question around campus, then there'll b people like us (student life is collaborating with other Christian groups like CU and ICF) wearing t shirts that says "I agree with Jeremy". then people would start asking questions without you having to initiate them. Then on August 10th (i think) Jeremy will be taking a leap of faith (that's the exact words) and stand outside the library stating what he believes.

cool huh? i thought that was a pretty good way to spread the Gospel.
Oddly enough, the first thing that several people have said that it brings to mind is not Jesus, but Pearl Jam:

At home, drawing pictures of mountain tops, with him on top.
Lemon yellow sun. Arms raised in a 'V'
And the dead lay in pools of maroon below.
Daddy didn't give attention, oh,
To the fact that mommy didn't care.
King Jeremy the wicked, oh, ruled his world...

I am tempted to encourage [livejournal.com profile] k2vsate to turn up on the day, with one of his many T-shirts that say "Jeremy" on it. False Messiah Olympics, anyone? :-)

Viral subversion. Stick the Pearl Jam lyrics on the various Jeremy posters. Wear Jeremy t-shirts, or "I <3 Jeremy" or "I question Jeremy's authority" or "I'm Jeremy" or "I did Jeremy" or whatever. Give your name as Jeremy in situations where honesty doesn't matter. Yay. :)

Start chalking "Do you agree with Cthulhu?". I'll buy a t-shirt that reads "Ia agree with Cthulhu" [sic].

It is a moderately inventive way to spread the word of the lord
but I can't help but wonder why the surreptitious approach?
The most obvious answer seems to me that if everyone was bombarded with posters and t-shirts everywhere that said "I agree with jesus" (which is surely what they really mean?) then most non-christians would be instantly turned off. This leads to the obvious conclusion--Jesus needs a boost, so he has decided to change his name to Jeremy. Jeremy is a popular jewish name ironically too, haha!

though, if they are subsitutiong Jeremy for Jesus, it would be more appropriate to use the name Josh.

They aren't. Jeremy is person, who is going to share his beliefs at some point.

I think you'll find that Student Life have been banned from having gatherings outside the library now.

Thank goodness for that. Right to free speech and all, but I don't think that that should stand if you're being obnoxious or openly harassing people.

You could have any number of speakers wearing "Jeremy" t-shirts on campus that day, speaking against the evils of shadowy and heavily funded religious action groups.

It would be terribly amusing

In Dunedin we have 'Student Unlife'! A lobby group for the undead...

I think the thing that amuses me the most about this is the lack of free will inherant in it.
All these people are wandering around saying they agree with Jeremy, and just trusting that in the end, where Jeremy says exactly what he believes, that it will be exactly what they agree with. And, well, too bad if it isn't.

No, I say! The People's Front of Jeremy is the true organisation. It is the Jeremy People's Front who broke off from The Movement.

though isn't a lack of free will fairly inherent in the whole christian thing in general?

So christians have found another way to brainwash the masses and infect the mindless herd.

I've never really gotten into the whole "viral" thing, though, so it does little but annoy me, as most pop culture trends do.

Mass T-shirt-wearing backlash!

"I am now predisposed to disagree with Jeremy"
"Spread your legs, not the Gospel!" (probably less offensive if worn by women)
